Sedation Dentistry For Kids

Types of Dental Sedation

The most effective form of sedation we use is nitrous oxide. Your child will be fully conscious and responsive during the procedure but will experience a deeper level of relaxation than normal. Oral conscious sedation is used orally in the form of a pill or liquid medication taken prior to the appointment. Oral sedatives help your child relax and remain calm throughout the dental procedures. For children who have severe anxiety, we recommend IV sedation. This type of sedation involves an intravenous injection that will put children into a deep level of relaxation and will not allow them to feel any pain. Children who undergo IV sedation will remain awake through the entire procedure.

Nitrous Oxide For Kids

Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, is a great option for children who have trouble sitting still or who need mild relaxation while receiving dental treatments. 

Nitrous oxide is a colorless gas with a slightly sweet smell and taste and is mixed with oxygen to breathe in through a mask that fits over the nose. The effects are felt almost immediately and can be adjusted with the mixture of oxygen and nitrous in the mask. After the procedure is complete, the nitrous is turned off, and oxygen is given for a few minutes to help flush any remaining effect from the body.

While laughing gas isn't for everyone, our dentists may recommend it for some children to enjoy a relaxing experience in our office. Children who are very anxious or fearful about going to the dentist can benefit from sedation dentistry before treatment begins. In some cases, oral medications may also be prescribed for children who struggle with anxiety or fear when going to the dentist.
